What does an art director actually do?+
An art director shapes the visual communication of a brand or campaign — making decisions about photography style, colour, typography, layout, and the overall visual tone of every piece of creative output. At Rue Rue, our art direction work always starts from brand strategy: we do not make visual decisions in isolation, we make them in service of what the brand needs to communicate.
How is art direction different from graphic design?+
Graphic design executes a visual language. Art direction creates it. Designers work within a system — art directors build the system, define its rules, and ensure that everything produced from it feels coherent and intentional. In practice, the two disciplines overlap — but art direction sits upstream, making the decisions that graphic design then works within.
Do you handle full campaign production or just the creative direction?+
Both. For some clients we are brought in purely as creative directors — shaping the visual platform and then handing off to their production team. For others we manage the full process: concept, pre-production, shoot direction, post-production, and final asset delivery. We are happy to work at whatever level of involvement serves the project best.
